Risk limit tiers decide liquidation buffers before leverage does

Leverage is only the headline number. Maintenance margin, risk-limit tiers, mark price and open orders determine how much room a futures position really has.

Many futures traders focus on the leverage slider, but liquidation risk is built from more than leverage. Bybit’s risk-limit documentation describes tiered controls and a laddered liquidation process. Binance’s liquidation-price and liquidation-protocol pages show how maintenance margin, margin balance and position notional interact. The account can be at risk even before the headline leverage looks extreme.

The important distinction is initial margin versus maintenance margin. Initial margin lets the trade open. Maintenance margin decides how much equity must remain to keep the trade alive. As position size rises, a trader can move into a higher risk tier, which may change the maintenance requirement and reduce the apparent buffer.

Mark price is another source of surprise. A trader may watch the last traded price and feel safe, while the exchange’s mark price moves closer to liquidation. Open orders can also affect margin usage, especially when a platform calculates exposure across positions and pending orders.

A better workflow is to choose the loss amount first, then set position size, then check liquidation price, maintenance margin and risk tier. Keep margin ratio well away from the danger zone, and reduce size before adding collateral becomes the only option. A position that survives only because the trader can deposit more during stress is not properly sized.

Risk notice: Futures and perpetual contracts can liquidate quickly during volatile moves. Calculators are planning tools, not guarantees, and exchange rules may change during stressed markets.
