Spot traders often compare exchanges by the first fee number they see, but that can be misleading. Coinbase’s help center explains that taker orders are filled immediately at market price, while maker orders rest on the order book; its exchange-fee page lists taker fees between 0.04% and 0.60% and maker fees between 0.00% and 0.40% depending on tier. Coinbase Advanced help also reminds users that partially matched orders can pay taker fees on the immediate portion and maker fees on the resting portion.
Kraken’s public exchange pages and 2026 exchange-selection guide position Kraken Pro around deeper trading tools, lower active-trader pricing, and a workflow aimed at users who already understand order books. For a beginner, Coinbase Advanced may feel more guided; for a frequent limit-order user, Kraken Pro can be attractive if the trading pair is liquid in your region and the withdrawal path is smooth.
The decision checklist should start with your order style. If you mostly use market orders, focus on taker fees and spreads. If you place limit orders patiently, maker fees and post-only controls matter more. If you trade small size, a slightly higher fee may matter less than clear confirmations and fewer operational mistakes. If you trade larger size, depth, slippage and withdrawal reliability can dominate the headline fee table.
A practical workflow is to test with a small trade: compare quoted price, final execution price, fee line, spread, order history clarity and withdrawal cost. Then check whether the same pair has enough liquidity during your normal trading hours. The cheapest exchange on paper is not always the cheapest venue after slippage, failed funding paths and rushed market orders.
