Coinbase Help describes bracket orders as an advanced order type that lets traders set profit and loss targets around an existing position. Its derivatives support page also notes that take-profit and stop-loss orders are reduce-only, meaning they are designed to reduce or close a position rather than increase it.
The feature is useful because it forces two questions at once: where should the trade take profit, and where is the trade wrong. That is healthier than entering first and deciding later. But a bracket order is not a guarantee of a clean exit. Fast markets, gaps, thin books and trigger design can still affect execution.
A practical setup should define the entry size, stop level, profit level, expected loss in account currency, and whether the order rests as a market-style or limit-style exit after triggering. Traders should also check whether the position has already changed before editing a bracket, because mismatched quantities can create a false sense of protection.
Bracket orders are especially valuable for traders who cannot watch the screen continuously. They are less useful if the stop is placed so close that normal spread movement triggers it, or so far away that the loss is too large for the account. The order tool should express a risk plan, not replace one.
