Coinbase 24/7 futures still need a weekend risk plan

Around-the-clock crypto futures access can reduce timing gaps, but traders still need to understand margin, maintenance windows and liquidity changes.

Coinbase Derivatives says it offers 24/7 trading for several margined futures contracts, with a weekly one-hour maintenance period from Friday 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time. That structure narrows the gap between regulated futures access and crypto’s always-on spot market.

More hours do not remove risk. They change when risk appears. Weekend trading can help a trader hedge spot exposure after traditional market hours, but liquidity may be thinner, spreads may widen, and a maintenance window can still interrupt order management at a bad moment.

The risk checklist should include contract size, initial and maintenance margin, whether the product is physically or cash settled, the weekly maintenance window, and how stops behave when markets move quickly. Coinbase’s margin education also notes that positions can be automatically reduced or closed if account equity falls below maintenance requirements.

For traders used to perpetual swaps, regulated futures should not be treated as the same instrument with a different logo. Contract specifications, expiry or rolling mechanics, margin rules and operating hours can all change the trade.
