Order type is a risk-control decision, not a cosmetic setting. Coinbase’s advanced trading guide separates market orders, limit orders, stop-limit orders and bracket orders, and the distinction matters because each one handles price certainty and execution certainty differently.
A market order prioritizes execution, which can be useful when exiting quickly but dangerous in thin books or fast volatility. A limit order prioritizes price, which can protect against bad fills but may never execute. A stop-limit order adds a trigger and a limit price, giving more control than a plain stop but creating the risk of no fill if the market jumps through the limit.
Bracket orders are useful when a trader already holds a position and wants both a profit-taking level and a defensive exit. Coinbase describes a bracket order as a way to set a limit price and a stop price around an existing asset position, with one side canceling when the other triggers. The value is discipline: the exit plan is defined before the screen becomes emotional.
Before placing any order, traders should ask three questions. Is the priority getting filled or controlling price. Is the order being used to enter a new position or manage an existing one. And is the trade liquid enough that the planned stop or limit has a realistic chance of behaving as expected. The same logic applies to crypto and stock trading, even though market hours and liquidity conditions differ.
