Crypto exchange comparison is no longer only about trading fees and coin lists. CoinDesk reported that Kraken is pursuing a full banking license in Europe, with Lithuania described as the target jurisdiction. If successful, the effort would fit a broader exchange strategy: combine crypto trading, payments, custody and regulated financial services under one roof.
For users, a banking license can sound reassuring, but it should still be analyzed carefully. A license may improve access to payment rails, account services or regional compliance. It does not automatically make every crypto product low-risk, and it does not remove market risk, token risk, counterparty exposure or operational outages.
A practical exchange checklist should separate three layers. First, trading quality: liquidity, spreads, order types, fees and downtime history. Second, asset custody: proof of reserves, segregation, withdrawal controls and insurance disclosures. Third, financial rails: fiat deposits, payment access, licensing scope, local user protections and complaint channels. A stronger exchange should be clear in all three layers.
Kraken’s reported Europe plan also matters for competitors. Exchanges that add banking or payment licenses may become more useful for active traders who move between fiat, spot, staking and derivatives. But convenience can concentrate risk if users keep too much capital on one platform. The better habit is to use regulated rails where they help, while still maintaining withdrawal, custody and position-size discipline.
