BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF remains one of the most visible ways for traditional brokerage users to access bitcoin price exposure. The iShares product page says IBIT seeks to reflect bitcoin’s price through an exchange-traded product and lists a 0.25% sponsor fee. That structure simplifies custody and brokerage workflow, but it is not the same as holding bitcoin directly on a crypto exchange or in self-custody.
The main advantage of an ETF is operational simplicity. A trader can buy and sell it through a securities account, use familiar statements and avoid handling wallets, seed phrases or exchange withdrawals. The trade-off is that ETF shares follow market hours, carry fund expenses and depend on the trust structure, market makers and authorized participants for tight tracking.
Direct spot bitcoin is different. It trades around the clock, can be transferred on-chain and may be useful for users who need crypto-native settlement or self-custody. But it also brings exchange, wallet, withdrawal, fee and security responsibilities. A beginner who only wants price exposure may prefer the ETF workflow; an active crypto user may value direct access more.
The practical comparison is not which product is universally better. It is whether the trader needs brokerage convenience, 24-hour crypto execution, on-chain transfer ability, or tighter integration with futures and options hedges.
