

CoinDesk reported that Ethereum Dencun economics made it much cheaper for rollups to post data to Ethereum, but also argued that many general purpose layer 2 chains now need a clearer reason to exist. For traders, lower fees are a real benefit. Smaller orders, rebalancing and on-chain hedges become easier when transaction costs are not the main constraint. The mistake is assuming that a cheaper chain is automatically a safer venue for collateral or yield.
A useful checklist starts with bridge design, sequencer assumptions, oracle dependency, total value locked concentration, withdrawal delays and emergency governance powers. If a strategy depends on moving collateral quickly between chains, the bridge is part of the trade, not background infrastructure.
Layer 2 selection should also match the strategy. A trader using a decentralized perpetual venue cares about uptime, oracle resilience and liquidation mechanics. A spot liquidity provider cares more about pool depth, fee tiers and whether incentives can disappear faster than expected.
