Circle states that USDC is fully backed by highly liquid cash and cash equivalent assets and publishes monthly reserve attestations. Its public page showed 73.1 billion dollars of USDC in circulation as of July 16, 2026. Tether also maintains a transparency page for circulating token metrics and reserve information.
The trading lesson is that a stablecoin is not just a ticker near one dollar. It is also a funding rail, a settlement asset, a collateral asset and sometimes the deepest quote currency on a venue. Liquidity can differ by exchange, chain and pair even when the headline peg looks stable.
Traders comparing USDC and USDT should look at four items: reserve disclosure cadence, redemption access, exchange pair depth and chain withdrawal reliability. A token with strong transparency but weak pair liquidity may be inefficient for fast execution. A token with broad liquidity but weaker disclosure may carry a different confidence risk.
For active accounts, stablecoin concentration should be a deliberate choice. Keeping every dollar of trading collateral in one issuer, one chain or one exchange can turn an operational issue into a portfolio-level problem.
