CEX spot volume is rebounding while derivatives dominance cools

June’s exchange data show spot trading recovering faster than derivatives, a useful signal for traders judging whether activity is accumulation or leverage chasing.

Centralized crypto exchange activity finally broke a five-month slide in June. CoinDesk Research reported that combined spot and derivatives volume rose 13 percent to $4.99 trillion, while spot volume climbed 15.3 percent to $1.11 trillion. Derivatives volume also rose, but derivatives’ share slipped from 78.2 percent to 77.7 percent. That small share change matters because it hints that some activity came from cash-market demand rather than only leveraged turnover.

Gate stood out in the report. Its spot volume rose 50.8 percent to $66.1 billion, lifting spot market share by 1.55 percentage points to 5.95 percent and returning the venue to third place among tracked centralized spot exchanges. For exchange-comparison work, this is a reminder that market share can shift quickly when listings, fee tiers and regional user flows line up.

The same report said RWA perpetual volume on centralized venues jumped 57 percent to a record $311 billion, with Binance leading the category. That is a new crossover point between crypto venues and traditional-market exposure. Traders should treat these products as derivatives first: index construction, funding, session rules and counterparty terms can matter more than the familiar name of the underlying stock or asset.

The practical takeaway is to compare exchanges by depth at the exact pair or contract, not only by brand size. Spot recovery can improve execution for swing traders and portfolio reallocations. Derivatives growth can improve hedging choices, but it also increases liquidation, funding-fee and basis risk. When both rise together, position sizing should be based on stress liquidity, not normal-screen liquidity.

Risk notice: Exchange volume and market-share data are backward-looking. Spot, margin and perpetual contracts can move sharply, and high reported volume does not guarantee usable liquidity for a specific order size.
