Account security becomes a trading issue when markets move quickly. Coinbase Help says it recommends a security key or passkey for two-step verification, while Kraken Support describes passkeys as a convenient and secure way to log in using device-based authentication. The practical point is simple: if access fails during volatility, even a correct market view may be useless.
Passkeys and hardware security keys reduce reliance on passwords and SMS-style recovery flows. They can also create new workflow questions. Which device stores the passkey? Can the trader still access the account if a phone is lost? Is there a backup key? Are recovery codes stored somewhere separate from the trading device? These questions should be answered before capital is at risk.
For active traders, the setup checklist should include primary sign-in, backup sign-in, withdrawal controls and emergency contact procedures. Do not test a new security method for the first time when a leveraged position is open. Add the method, confirm login from the devices you actually use, then document the recovery path without storing sensitive secrets in plain text.
This is also a product-comparison point. An exchange with many order tools but weak account-recovery discipline may not be suitable for a trader who needs fast access during market stress. Conversely, stronger security can add friction, so the goal is not maximum complexity. The goal is reliable access with reduced phishing and SIM-swap risk.
