Micro Bitcoin futures can make regulated bitcoin exposure easier to size, but the smaller contract does not remove calendar risk. CME’s education page says Micro Bitcoin futures expire on the last Friday of the month and highlights three choices before expiration: offset the position, hold to expiration or roll the exposure into another contract.
Offsetting means placing an opposite and equal trade to close the current exposure before final settlement. This is often the cleanest approach for short-term traders who entered for a specific catalyst. It turns the position back into cash and removes the risk of being surprised by settlement mechanics.
Holding to expiration is different. CME notes that Micro Bitcoin futures settle in cash according to the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate. Because the contract is one tenth of a bitcoin, a two-thousand-dollar move in bitcoin translates into two hundred dollars per Micro Bitcoin contract in CME’s example. The smaller notional helps sizing, but the mark-to-market still matters.
Rolling is for traders who want to maintain exposure beyond the current contract. That usually means using a calendar spread to exit the expiring month and enter a later month. The roll price can reflect carrying costs and market structure, so traders should check the calendar spread rather than assuming the next contract is a free extension of the same trade.
