Many crypto users compare exchanges by headline reputation or token coverage, then ignore the screen they actually use to place an order. That can be expensive. Kraken’s fee materials distinguish instant buy, sell and convert flows from exchange-style order-book trading. Coinbase explains that Advanced fees vary by maker and taker status, while Binance and OKX publish tiered fee schedules that can differ across spot, futures and user levels.
The first comparison is instant execution versus order-book execution. An instant buy or convert screen is convenient because it hides the mechanics. The trade-off is that the quoted price may include a spread or a simpler fixed-fee model. An advanced order book takes more attention, but it lets traders see bid and ask depth, choose limit or market behavior, and understand whether they are adding liquidity as a maker or removing it as a taker.
The second comparison is spot versus derivatives. A futures screen may show a lower headline trading fee, but it adds funding, leverage, margin and liquidation risk. A spot trade has no funding payment and no forced liquidation from exchange margin, but it can still suffer from slippage, withdrawal fees and tax/accounting complexity. The cheaper route is the one that matches the intended holding period and risk exposure, not always the one with the lowest visible percentage.
A practical checklist is simple. Before clicking buy, identify the screen type, expected spread, maker or taker status, trading fee, withdrawal cost, and whether the order will count toward a volume tier. For small recurring purchases, convenience may be worth paying for. For active traders, large orders, or high-turnover strategies, route selection can become part of the edge. Fee tables are not marketing fine print; they are execution inputs.
