DeFi risk does not end when a protocol is abandoned

Reports of funds drained from the deprecated Aztec Connect protocol are a reminder that old approvals, bridges and contracts can remain live risk for Web3 users.

A recent Bitcoin Foundation report said an attacker drained more than 2.1 million dollars from the deprecated Aztec Connect protocol in June. Whether a user actively trades DeFi or only keeps a few old wallet approvals, the lesson is broader than one incident: abandoned infrastructure can still contain live permissions, liquidity, or user habits.

DeFi risk is different from exchange-app risk. On a centralized exchange, account controls such as withdrawal allowlists and 2FA sit between the user and the transfer. On-chain, a wallet approval or bridge interaction can remain valid until revoked, and an old protocol may no longer have the same monitoring, frontend warnings, or liquidity support it once had.

For traders, this matters because portfolio risk is not only price exposure. A wallet used for airdrops, liquidity mining, or old bridge transactions can carry operational risk even when the market is calm. Before chasing a new yield or meme-coin rotation, review token approvals, separate hot wallets from long-term holdings, and avoid signing transactions from unofficial mirrors or social links.

DeFi is still useful, but the risk checklist has to include contract age, audit history, current developer activity, total value locked trend, and whether the protocol has announced sunset or migration instructions. A position can be small and still create an oversized wallet-security problem.
