Perpetual futures can be useful for hedging or tactical trading, but the product is unforgiving when position size and margin are poorly managed. Coinbase?s education page explains that liquidation occurs when a position no longer meets maintenance margin requirements after adverse price movement. The practical takeaway is simple: liquidation risk starts before the order is placed.
A safer workflow begins with position size. Decide the maximum account loss first, then calculate the contract size that fits that loss if the stop is reached. Choosing leverage before defining loss is backwards, because higher leverage lowers the price distance to liquidation and can turn a normal market swing into a forced close.
Second, separate the stop-loss level from the liquidation level. A stop should sit where the trade idea is invalidated, while liquidation is an emergency boundary controlled by margin rules. Traders should also account for slippage, fast markets and funding payments, because these costs can make the real exit worse than the chart plan.
Third, review account exposure. Multiple correlated long positions can behave like one oversized trade when bitcoin or ether volatility rises. Hedging can help, but only if the hedge size, instrument and funding cost are understood. If a trader cannot explain how the position behaves after a 3%, 5% or 10% adverse move, the position is probably too complex or too large.
