Proof of reserves has become a normal exchange-safety page, but it should be read as one checkpoint rather than a complete guarantee. Binance says its proof-of-reserves page is intended to show user assets backed one to one plus reserves. OKX says it maintains one to one reserves and publishes recurring reserve reports with primary-asset totals.
Those disclosures are useful because they give users a way to compare transparency habits. A trader can check whether an exchange publishes wallet holdings, Merkle-tree verification, asset-by-asset ratios, report history and explanations of liabilities. A page that is easy to verify is more practical than a marketing claim that only says funds are safe.
The limitation is just as important. Proof of reserves usually focuses on on-chain assets and user balances at a reporting point. It may not fully answer questions about corporate liabilities, legal claims, banking partners, operational controls or what happens during a sudden withdrawal rush.
A practical comparison should combine PoR with withdrawal testing. Keep a whitelisted self-custody address, test a small withdrawal before you need it, review network fees, and avoid storing idle trading capital on an exchange simply because the reserve ratio looks strong.
