Most exchange apps now present trading bots as a menu of convenient tools, but the labels can hide very different risk profiles. Bybit’s bot page lists grid, DCA and futures strategies. OKX describes spot grid bots as automated buy/sell orders inside a specified range. Bybit’s futures-grid FAQ says futures grid bots place long and short positions at regular intervals and are designed for volatile, sideways markets.
A spot grid bot is usually the simplest starting point because it trades the asset itself. The main risk is inventory: if price falls through the range, the bot may accumulate the coin and the account value may drop. That is still real risk, but there is no liquidation engine in plain spot trading.
A futures grid bot changes the problem. It may look similar on the screen, but leverage, margin mode, funding fees and liquidation distance become central. A futures grid can be useful for traders who understand contract sizing and margin, but it is not a beginner shortcut. The first setting to inspect is not projected APR; it is leverage and maximum loss if the market trends.
A DCA bot solves a different workflow: staged accumulation or staged exits over time. It can reduce timing pressure, but it can also keep buying into a falling market unless there is a budget cap and invalidation rule. DCA is a plan, not a guarantee that the average price will become profitable.
The comparison rule is simple. Use spot grid only when the trader is comfortable owning the asset. Use futures grid only when liquidation math, funding and margin mode are fully understood. Use DCA only with a fixed budget, clear schedule and exit condition. Automation should reduce manual workload, not outsource judgment.
