Crypto Exchange Fees: How To Compare Maker, Taker And Withdrawal Costs

A practical comparison framework for checking spot trading fees, maker/taker behavior, VIP tiers, withdrawal costs and hidden spread risk before choosing an exchange workflow.

Exchange-fee comparisons are easy to oversimplify. The cheapest platform for a passive limit-order trader may not be the cheapest platform for someone who mostly uses market orders, converts small balances or withdraws often. A useful comparison starts with the exact workflow: spot trade, futures trade, fiat on-ramp, crypto withdrawal or long-term storage.

On Binance’s public fee page, regular spot users are shown a 0.100 percent maker and 0.100 percent taker fee before discounts, with lower tiers available for larger 30-day volume and BNB-fee discounts. OKX’s fee page lists spot maker and taker rates by user level and also displays withdrawal limits. Coinbase explains that Advanced Trade uses maker and taker pricing, that taker orders fill immediately, and that the fee tier is based on recent trading volume.

The practical difference is order behavior. A market order and an immediately filled limit order usually pay taker fees. A limit order that rests on the book can pay maker fees, but it may not fill. Coinbase also notes that a partially matched order can split fees: the immediate part pays taker while the resting part pays maker. That means the fee estimate should be checked on the order preview, not guessed from a headline table.

For active traders, calculate break-even cost before choosing a route. If you enter and exit with taker orders, the round-trip trading fee can be materially higher than one maker entry and one maker exit. Add spread, funding if using perpetuals, possible borrow or margin cost, and withdrawal fees if you plan to move assets off-platform. A low trading fee is less useful if the product lacks liquidity in the pair you actually trade.

A beginner-friendly workflow is to keep a simple fee notebook: platform, pair, order type, estimated maker/taker fee, spread at order time, withdrawal network, withdrawal fee and minimum withdrawal. Compare BTC, ETH and stablecoin pairs separately because liquidity and network costs can differ sharply.

Risk notice: Fee schedules can change and may differ by region, product, account tier and verification status. Always verify the current fee page and final order preview before trading or withdrawing.
